Toronto: French Fort (1615-1760)

The first European to arrive to the shores of Lake Ontario in the vicinity of what is now Toronto was French explorer Etienne Brule. Toronto was very fundamental for it's series of trails and water routes that led from northern and western Canada to the Gulf of Mexico. Called as the "Toronto Passage", it followed the Humber River, as a relevant overland shortcut among Lake Ontario and the upper Great Lakes. For this fact Toronto became a hot spot for French fur traders.

Hostilities alive in Europe between Britain and France conducted into the colonial settlements and intense rivalries developed among the two as they vied for control of the fur trade and other resources. By September 1760 the British had vanquished the French who withdrew from North America spelling the end of French rule.
